What are the benefits of family mediation?

Feb 3, 2018 | News

Mediation Benefits

In many countries family mediation is well known and growing such as Canada and the USA, but in the UK many separating couples initially go to their respective solicitors/lawyers to prepare for a court case. These YouTube videos hopefully will let families see that mediation offers an alternative route to court. In the following videos the benefits are looked at one by one. Stuart Hanson, family mediator, said, “We encourage people considering mediation to watch these videos, as we know that the mediation process is unknown for many and the prospect of attending can be incredibly daunting, especially if communications are difficult or non-existent. We also welcome people to get in contact with us by telephone or email with their questions or comments.”

Mediation Worries

For some people mediation seems unnatural, especially when communications have broken down or have become very difficult, but even in these circumstances communications generally need to be reestablished and mediation can be the first step. Stuart went on to say that “Understanding the potential benefits of entering the mediation room can make the journey easier, especially when the family courts in the UK require the person submitting the C100 application (child arrangements) in most cases to attend a Mediation, Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM) before coming to court. One thing that people do not realise is that family mediation can run alongside court proceedings and can narrow the issues being discussed by the parents.”

Benefits

The family mediators at Direct Mediation Services are accredited by the Family Mediation Council (FMC) and therefore are experienced in helping families communicate and getting the very best out of the mediation sessions. Tenzin Gyatso was the fourteenth Dalia Lama and said these words, “Dialogue is the most effective way of resolving conflict.” We believe at Direct Mediation Services that for many families, mediation might be the first step to finding an agreement for everyone.
